When I was growing up in Montreal, our family Seders were filled with guests of all sorts. My father, a rabbi, often enriched the Seder for us by telling how other Jews celebrated Passover. I don’t remember the first time I heard the true story that forms the basis for The Yankee at the Seder, but I’ve known it for years.
Because I enjoy learning about people in other times and cultures, I got a Ph.D. in Islamic history. I had a great time studying Arabic and the history of the Muslim world. I have taught history in both high school and college, but now I’m putting my love of history to a different use by writing historical fiction.
As much fun as it is to study history and learn about things that have really happened, it’s even more fun to imagine what might have been. And that’s how I started writing.
The Yankee at the Seder is my first book for children. When the publisher called to say that Tricycle Press would be publishing the story, my whole family celebrated. It’s a great thrill to see my books in bookstores!
I live in New Jersey with my husband and five children. Our home is full of books and stories. Although sometimes the children listen to the stories I tell, they are great readers, too.
I love to hear from my readers. You can write to me at elka@elkaweber.com.
